Words I need to hear more in my own head:

Quit consuming so much

Regarding your editorial “Trash talking” (June 20), the city rolled out new carts to help make recycling an even smoother process for Portland residents. Portland is ahead of many regions in recycling and awareness. Curbing trash demands a battery of tools including those not comfortably considered: rethinking the needs and motivations behind common purchases.

The ubiquity of single-serving, disposable plastic water bottles in the last 15 years illuminates our notions of convenience and the power of advertising. Citizens everywhere need a cogent strategy to mitigate trash and understand its roots.

Beyond bottle bills, we as a society need to face the glut of cheap, disposable goods diligently kept afloat in a culture pivoting on convenience and obsolescence.
